The Benefits of Bodywork

 My approach

My approach to the therapeutic use of touch has been informed by my interest in and exposure to many different things. I have enjoyed movement throughout my life: modern and ballroom dancing, yoga, tai chi and the martial arts.  Years of studying and practicing shiatsu at Ohashi Institute, New York City, introduced me to the Eastern worldview in which human healing and wellbeign are intrinsically connected to the vast energies and healing powers of the natural world that we inhabit.  Currently, I am studying and practicing Healing Touch, a form of energetic healing created over 20 years ago by a nurse named Janet Menken. Originally, Healing Touch was  practiced by nurses in the hospital setting as an adjunct to alleopathic medicine. At the present time Healing Touch education has spread all over the world and is currently used in many settings by trained practitioners.

In the 20 years since I began learning, I have worked with people living with chronic pain, cancer, stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Lou Gehrig’s Disease, Cerebral Palsy, and the journey toward death. Individuals, struggling with grace and courage to live well in the midst of the pain, loss and fear, have given me evidence of the power of human touch. A subject of relatively recent interest and research is the embryological connection between the human being's brain and his/her skin. This connection is responsible for the profound neuro-immunological effects of educated touch.

I understand bodywork as an exchange in which giver and receiver discover how best to mobilize their mental, physical and spiritual strengths to support the body, mind and spirit while relieving suffering.
